A New Kind of Department Chair
Leaders in the Long Beach Unified School District are asking middle school
department chairs to assume new leadership roles in standards-based reform.
Here's an overview of how the chair's job might change:
1997-98 Job Description
Middle School Department Chair
= Order books and supplies
= Pass out and collect paperwork
= Organize department meetings
= Disseminate news and directives
= Perform other bureaucratic duties as assigned
1998-99 Job Description
Middle School Department Chair
= Serve as site-based coach for standards implementation
= Provide leadership during monthly department meetings
= Help teachers try out and revise standards-based lessons
= Facilitate regular department reviews of student work
= Attend regular training sessions to learn how to do all of the above
= Perform duties described in previous job description
