The standards underlying the assignment
To raise their awareness of the academic standards that undergird the
activity, students use them as a guide to discuss among themselves what
they've learned about the flood and how it will affect them as Jefferson
County residents.
These are the standards Curt Matter shares with his students:
THE STANDARDS
Kentucky's Learning Goal # 2
Students shall develop their abilities to apply core concepts and principles
from mathematics, the sciences, the arts, the humanities, social studies,
practical living studies, and vocational studies to what they will encounter
throughout their lives.
Kentucky's Social Studies Academic Expectations
Students recognize and understand the relationship between people and geography
and apply their knowledge in real-life situations. Students understand economic
principles and are able to make economic decisions that have consequences
in daily living.
Social Studies Core Content
- The physical environment both limits and promotes human activities
(e.g. mountains act as barriers or protection, rivers used as boundaries,
transportation routes, etc.)
- People adapt or modify the environment to meet their needs.
- Economic principles (e.g. supply/demand, revenues/cost production,
distribution, consumption, surplus, scarcity, etc.) affect economic decisions
that have consequences in daily living.
