Resources for Teaching Content Literacy -- Here's a list that Juli compiled near the end of her first "Year of Teaching Content Literacy." She's included many of the resources she found most useful and successful.

Good Job
- Eighty-six ways to tell students they're doing a good job.

A Retelling Rubric for Informational Text - "One thing that's tricky about scoring retellings is that conventions and grammar do not enter in to the score. Yes, you want them to do their best work and use their best grammar, spelling, etc. But what's important here is their comprehension of the text. It takes a while to learn how to read retellings with your focus on the content -- setting the rest aside. But it gives tons of information about how and what kids comprehend in text. It's fascinating because you can follow the trails of their thinking." (Journal #4)

Vocabulary Wall Chart - Suitable for posting in your classroom. "When I need to clarify the meaning of a word or phrase, I can try one of these things to help myself."

"Wilderness and You, Discover the Connection" Training Guide -- I developed this checklist to guide the trainers as they go through the eFieldtrip (Journal #10). It's almost self-explanatory. It includes everything they need to do from logging onto the Internet to filling out the evaluation.

eFieldtrip Training Evaluation -- I created this form for the kids to use (see Journal #10). This is a way for me, as well as the other trainers, to get feedback about the process and to see what our trainees like and what suggestions they have.

Checklist for Student-Led Conferences -- Here's the checklist I used to teach the kids how to do the conferences and to scaffold the task (see Journal #15). It worked very well.

Literature Study Survey -- At the end of her unit on literature study using informational text, Juli surveyed her students about their learning, using this instrument.

Oral Presentation Self-Assessment Scoring Guide -- Juli and her students used this guide to assess student presentations during the Nonfiction Investigations unit. She describes how the guide is used in Journal #25. "We work together to create this scoring guide so we have a way to reflect on our presentations and think about what we might change in the future. We've found that self-evaluations are an important part of growing as readers and writers." (Small PDF file)

Other Resources

Review of Word Savvy by Max Brand - Kim MacDonald began her sixth year of teaching sixth grade "with the belief that teaching spelling in a traditional way was not working for either the students or myself." She agreed with Nagy that "the single most important thing a teacher can do to promote vocabulary growth is to increase students' volume of reading." But how to best go about increasing student vocabulary, making them aware of spelling patterns and providing them with strategies for tackling unknown words? "Through Max Brand's book, I now have a clearer vision of how best to incorporate word study into my whole day." Read her review.

Personal Word List - "Everyone gets a copy.... Kids can add the words they need to know how to spell for their writing or for general interest. This gives them an additional reference for spelling during writing." (Journal #7)

"Give it a try" Notes - "When kids don't know how to spell a word, we encourage them to get a post-it and try writing the word or phrase in three different ways." This file shows examples of post-it notes (500k). Journal #7.

Independent Writing Rubric - "We use an Independent Writing Rubric to help students understand their responsibilities. We developed this rubric after having success using the Independent Reading Rubric. It has a positive impact on how seriously our writers take their writing." (Journal #5)

Comparison of Reading and Writing Workshop curriculum maps - This side-by-side table shows how Juli paces her reading and writing workshops, which include the same students.

Rubric for Writers' Notebooks - "I'll probably score the notebooks on a weekly basis to make sure that the kids understand what is expected of them and get a chance to improve their work over time."

General Writing Rubric for Writing Workshop - You'll need to download Part One and Part Two. Both are small files.

Writing Conference Sheet - Juli uses a sheet like this to track her observations. (Journal #3)

Calendar for Publication Dates and Open Mike - "Open Mike" is scheduled on the publication date for each unit of study. (Journal #9)

Persuasive Writing Checklist - "This really helped my kids during their writing of persuasive essays. We spent lots of time reading and talking about it and then used it as a guide during our mini lessons. When they did their writing, it was at their sides. When I wrote my own essay about dogs on leashes, I modeled how to use the checklist. They tell me that it really helps them write better. It also gave us a common language and clear, explicit expectations for their persuasive essay writing." (Journal #20)

Peer Conference Form - "I'm using a format with which we are already familiar -- evidence chosen from the writing is on one side and comments are on the other. At the bottom, there's room for the writer to put down a plan of action based on the comments and feedback from the reader/s." (Journal #24)

A Writing Rubric Based on Six Traits - MiddleWeb editor John Norton gathered this rubric from teachers at Maryvale Elementary School in Mobile AL, where the Six Traits writing process guides teaching and learning. It's very student-friendly!

A Planning Tool for Students' Summer R/W Projects -- "To plan out the reading and writing work they will do during the summer, kids complete the Reading and Writing Project Planning Sheet. I intended that the questions would help them 'visualize' what it will take to actually do their project." (Journal #34)

Independent Reading Rubric - Reproduced by Juli from a teacher's handwritten poster, photographed in Lucy Calkins' The Art of Teaching Reading. Juli uses this rubric daily with students and will discuss it in several journal entries. She writes: "We score ourselves each time after doing Independent Reading. So far it has clarified for them what I expect and teaches what good readers do." See Juli's background paper.

Reading Conference Form - Juli shares the form she's using to track student progress in the reading conference. She writes: "On this form a checkmark stands for 'OK' and a minus stands for 'No Way.'" Juli has also provided a blank conference form for your use. See Journal 3.

The Reading Assessment Flowchart / Part 1 -- "This is our first handout for helping teachers select/level books for students," Juli writes. See Journal 4.

The Reading Assessment Flowchart / Part 2 -- Juli recommends the "Flow Chart of Comprehension-Monitoring Behaviors." (pp. 98-99) in Improving Comprehension with Think-Aloud Strategies by Jeff Wilhelm. "It's very complete and totally student centered. This is probably the biggest change I've made this year - moving much more toward student centered assessment as the way to build independent, reflective, strategic readers." (See Wk 30.)
